The main goals of this project – A Manual on Work and Happiness – were the audience development and the engagement of communities in the creative process of a stage show by a Portuguese Company Mala Voadora.

Non professional actors were encouraged to collectively think upon the links between work, leisure and happiness, questioning the status quo and imagining the shape of work in a technological future.

The play is the result of a 3-week artistic residency coordinated by Mala Voadora. The local community took part in the creative process and worked along with the director Jorge Andrade and the professional actor Vítor d’Andrade, in the making of a play based on texts by the Catalan author Pablo Gisbert.

Miss Cila, a local resident, participated in this performance. She was nervous and anxious not only because it was her first experience in theatre, but also because she had never been in front of an audience. She told us that she has some difficulties reading and because of that she chose a role without words.
Two years later she was invited to participate as an actress in another play called “Stories about Lisbon” in one of the most important theatres in Lisbon. However, this time, she had a speaking role.
